The Franciscan Calling

While he was walking near the Church of San Damiano, an inner voice told Francis to enter and pray. He obeyed, and kneeling before an image of the crucified Saviour, he began to pray most devoutly. A tender, compassionate voice then spoke to him, “Francis, do you not see that my house is falling into ruin? Go, and repair it for me”. Saint Francis responded to the call of God by embracing the Gospel way of life.

From these humble beginnings in the Umbrian town of Assisi, in what is now central Italy there began a spiritual revival within the Church. This revival, led by Saint Francis of Assisi, has inspired, and continues to inspire, both men and women from almost every country of the world.

God continues to call people from varied backgrounds and from all walks of life, asking them to leave everything in order to follow our Lord Jesus Christ wherever He might lead them. And with generous hearts people continue to respond to this calling from God by giving their life to Christ, as Christ gave His life for us on the Cross.

With the grace of God those people who are generous enough to respond to the call of God become living witnesses of the selfless generosity of God in our world.

It is quite an unsettling time if we are asked by God to let go of certain things and certain ways which were of great value to us in the past but are actually no longer of any importance to us as we seek to unite our will to the will of God.

And so during this time, as we seek to understand the will of God, it is helpful to share our thoughts and our concerns with someone else. It is helpful to find someone whom we trust, not someone who is going to impose their own agenda on us but rather someone who is willing to walk with us and alongside us, someone who is able to help us to see more clearly the path which God is calling us to follow.

And if we begin to feel that perhaps this path is with the Franciscan Order then it is worthwhile approaching the Franciscan friars in person, so as to speak to them, so as to speak to us, face to face, brother to brother, in order to share our experience, in order to help one another in our journey through life and in our journey to God.

Responding to the Lord’s call is always the path to abundant blessings for oneself and others!

St Francis prayer before the Cross

Most High, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart
and give me true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord,
that I may carry out Your holy and true command. Amen
