Elysha Brennan, who was crowned Rose of Tralee at the international festival, is a former student of Franciscan College in Gormanston Co Meath.

From Bettystown, Co Meath, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a form of leukemia in 2012, while re-sitting her Leaving Certificate. The 22-year-old has conquered cancer, and is now a medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Speaking after becoming the 57th Rose of Tralee, she said, ‘I’m here for a reason. I know that the Rose of Tralee has been brought into my life for a reason. I never imagined that this would be even a possibility. I’ve been surrounded by an avalanche of love for the last 22 years.’

She described her win as the ‘highest of highs’, with her cancer diagnosis when she was 19 the ‘lowest of lows’.
