Our brother, Liam McDermott OFM, has died after an extended illness in South Africa.

A native of Ballymote, County Sligo, where he was born in 1934, Sean joined the Franciscan Order in Killarney in 1953. He received the religious name of Liam and made his Simple Profession in 1954. After his studies he was ordained to the priesthood in Rome in 1963.

He felt drawn to the foreign missions and went to join the Irish Franciscans in the Diocese of Kokstad. He was involved in pastoral ministry in rural missions in that diocese and in various township parishes throughout the country.

He also worked in the formation of young friars and in leadership roles among the Franciscans.

When the new Franciscan Province of Our Lady, Queen of Peace was established in 1985 Fr Liam was chosen as its first Minister Provincial.

May the Lord’s beloved and dedicated servant be received into eternal joy.
