YPicture_210.jpgesterday was the Feast of St. Francis and today the Franciscan Fraternity from The Abbey, 8 St. Francis St. Galway assembled in Eyre Square with many people from Galway City and County for the blessing of their pets.

St. Francis has always been associated with birds and animals and towards the end of his life he composed the ‘Canticle of the Creatures’ praising God for all of creation.   Part of our prayer of blessing today was as follows:
O God you have made us and these pets and all living things.   You are even more wonderful than the things you have made.  We thank you for giving us these pets who give us joy.   As you take care of us, so also we ask that you help us to take care of our pets who trust us to take care of them.   By doing this, we know that we share in your own love for all creation.   We ask this in Jesus’ name.   Amen.
