Our brother Gerry died suddenly in Pretoria, South Africa on 21st June. He was 81 years of age. Born in Limerick city in 1939, he was an altar boy in the friary there. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1957 when he went to the novitiate in Killarney and made his First Profession of Vows in 1958. After studies in Galway and Rome he was ordained a priest in March 1965.

Gerry was appointed assistant novice master in Killarney and gave three years to that ministry. But his heart was set on the foreign missions so in 1969 he left for the Franciscan Mission in Kokstad, South Africa. He was to spend the next 52 years as a dedicated servant of the people in many different townships and Franciscan parishes throughout that country.

Always a man of great energy, his devotion to Christ and to the faith meant that he spent himself in generous service wherever he was assigned.

Gerry will be greatly missed by the friars and people in his adopted homeland and by his heartbroken family in Ireland with whom he kept close contact over the years.

May Gerry rest in the peace of Christ.
