On 12th September 2000, 67 of Ireland’s most precious Gaelic manuscripts, nestling in boxes filled with layers of protective wrapping, were moved from the Franciscan House of Studies in Killiney into the carefully controlled atmospheric conditions of UCD’s archives department.

The transfer represented the first stage in the realisation of an agreement signed just two months earlier between Dr. Art Cosgrove, President of UCD, and Fr. Ulic Troy, Franciscan Provincial.  The university and the Franciscans have created a special partnership to offer a new home for the manuscripts, to conserve them, and then to make available to scholars in particular and the public in general some of the country’s chief cultural treasures.
