Our brother, Fr Hugh O’Donnell OFM (Aodh Ua Domhnaill), died peacefully on 11 July 2023 in Beechfield Manor Nursing Home, Shankill where Hugh had moved to recently. Hugh was 83 and a member of the Franciscan Community, Dún Mhuire, Killiney, Co Dublin.
Hugh, from Monkstown, Dublin, was received into the Franciscan novitiate in 1957. He made solemn profession in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood in Rome in 1965.
He joined the Franciscan mission in Zimbabwe and remained there for 42 years ministering with great dedication in both urban parishes and rural missions.
In 2007 Hugh returned to Ireland and served in St Fergal’s Parish in Bray from 2008 to 2017. Following this, he was chaplain to the De La Salle Brothers in Miguel House in Castletown, Co. Laois up to 2021.
Hugh was the eldest brother of Nuala (Ni Dhomhnaill) and Siobhan (Dunne). He is deeply missed by his sisters, brother-in-law, Liam, nephews and nieces, friends, wider family and his Franciscan brothers.
Reposing at Dún Mhuire, Seafield Road, Killiney on Friday 14 July from 4.30pm to 8.30pm.
Funeral Mass on Saturday 15 July at Adam and Eve’s, Merchants’ Quay, at Dublin 9.30am, followed by burial at Shanganagh Cemetery.
