Our brother, Fr PJ Brady OFM, a member of the Killarney fraternity, died on 16 December in Fatima Home, Tralee, Co Kerry. He was 73 years of age.
He had suffered serious ill health for several years and borne his suffering without complaint and with great patience.
He was born in the parish of Ballintra Co Donegal in 1951. His family had close links with the Franciscans in Rossnowlagh. He joined the Order in 1969 and celebrated his First Profession the following year in Killarney. After studies in UCG Galway and in Rome, PJ was ordained to the priesthood in Ballintra in July 1977.
His first appointment was to the fraternity in Multyfarnham Co Westmeath. He was to remain there until 1993. He was chaplain, teacher and eventually rector in the Agricultural College run by the Franciscans there. He also was guardian of the fraternity for six years. PJ loved “Multy” and was held in esteem and affection by the staff and students in the college, and by the local people.
He later served in our friaries in Drogheda and Limerick, and also had various roles in the Provincial Office. In 2014 PJ was appointed to the Killarney community. There, even as he struggled with ill health, he continued his church ministry with kindness and dedication.
With his quiet presence, gentle wit and distinctive deep laugh – PJ had a capacity for friendship and will be deeply missed by family, community and his numerous friends throughout Ireland and in Italy.
Our sincere sympathy to his nine remaining siblings, large extended family and to all who grieve him. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
