Our brother, Peter O’Grady OFM went home peacefully to the Lord on 5th January 2023 (Franciscan Abbey, Galway and St Francis Friary, Cork). He was resident in Carrigoran Nursing Home.
Peter was born in Ennis in May 1925. He joined the Franciscans when he entered the novitiate in Killarney friary in 1942. There he received the religious name Benjamin, though he reverted back to his baptismal name in late 1960s. After studies in Galway and Rome he was ordained to the priesthood in Rome in April 1950.
Over his long life Peter was appointed to various Irish friaries, including Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford, Multyfarnham, and Limerick. Later in life he was to spend 24 years in the Abbey in Galway.
Wherever he was, Peter showed great dedication to his priestly ministry, in particular in hearing confessions and visiting the sick. He was also committed to promoting the Secular Franciscan Order, and he was a devoted spiritual assistant to various SFO fraternities over the decades.
Peter was held in high esteem by the Irish Franciscans and was chosen several times to have a role in the formation of young friars, both in Galway and Rome.
A Friar Minor who lived an ascetic and prayerful life, Peter was recognized for his integrity, loyalty to Church teaching, and faithfulness to his Franciscan vocation.
