On Monday 13th June, the death took place in Cork of our brother, Ultan McCaffery OFM. May he rest in the peace of Christ whom he sought to follow and serve during his long life.

Ultan was born in Ardee, Co Louth in August 1934 and was given the name Simeon when he joined the Franciscan Order in 1952 and entered the novitiate in Killarney. He opted to return to his baptismal name in 1968 when the choice was offered. He celebrated his First Profession of Vows in 1953 and, after studies in Galway and Rome, was ordained a priest in Rome in 1960.

He went to join the Franciscan mission to Zimbabwe in 1962 where he remained until 1977 working in the rural missions. From 1979 to 1994 he was Pretoria, South Africa as a lecturer in Sacred Scripture in the national seminary, then in the care of the friars. He was in Zimbabwe again from 1994, chiefly in Harare.

He returned to Ireland in 2005 and was appointed to our friary community in Waterford in 2005, moving to Cork Friary in 2019.

The Funeral Mass for Ultan will take place on Monday, 20th June at St Francis Church, Liberty Street, Cork. The remains will be received at 10:00 a.m., and the Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will take place in the Franciscan plot in St Finbarr’s Cemetery.

“Welcome Sister Death!”
