Franciscan Friary, WaterfordFranciscan Friary,

Lady Lane,

Tel: (051) 874262

The friary was founded 1240. With the turmoil of the Reformation church turned into a hospital for the poor in 1541. A new house was built in 1612. The friars, of whom there were only two in 1766, lived mostly in Johnstown. We know that there were three friars in Clonmel 1801. The Franciscans came to the present site in 1830, and the friary was built in 1833 and church completed in 1834. However the church was not opened for several years afterwards due to opposition on the part of the local bishop. The friary was reconstructed in 1928, and the church in 1908, 1930 and was consecrated in 1944.

Local Activities:

Our Friary in Waterford is situated in the centre of the bustling city, beside a busy shopping centre. The Church provides all the usual Church services, with frequent Masses, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and parlour ministry. Among the Church groups there is an active Secular Franciscan fraternity.

The friars are also the official chaplains in Ardkeen hospital, which is a huge hospital within the city area, and serving much of the South-East of the country. One of the friars manages a company, Respond, which concentrates on providing sheltered housing, not only in Waterford but in other parts of the country, too. Other friars work with the Samaritans, with the Community Games organisation, etc.
