A very happy and rare event (for the Irish Franciscans) took place in the Poor Clare chapel in Ennis on Monday 5 December.
Fr Tom Ryan P.P. (Shannon) was received as affiliate of the Franciscan Order by Minister Provincial, Hugh McKenna OFM, and received from him the Franciscan habit as the symbol of Fr Tom’s new union with the Order of St Francis.
For years Fr Tom has been a close friend of the friars in Ireland and an ardent supporter of our vision and ministry.
Many of his family and friends, along with the friars and the new bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monaghan, gathered to shared Tom’s joy. The Poor Clare sisters sung beautifully as Vespers and the ritual were celebrated.
He will continue to be a diocesan priest serving in Shannon, but now he has entered into a new spiritual and fraternal communion with the Franciscan Family. And Fr Tom can be buried with the friars – if he wants to!
