
Our brother Louis Brennan OFM went home peacefully to God on 12th August.
Fr. Louis was born in Dublin on 21st December 1929, joined the Franciscans friars and made First Profession of Vows on 8th September 1949 in Killarney Friary. He was ordained a priest on 30th June 1957 in Rome.
His first appointment was as a teacher in Franciscan College, Gormanston Co. Meath where after some years he was made rector. He was elected Minister Provincial of the Franciscan Province of Ireland at the 1972 Provincial Chapter; he was re-elected in 1978.
At the General Chapter of 1979, he was elected Definitor General of the Order; in 1985, after the General Chapter of that year, he was elected Secretary General of the Order.
When his mandate at the Franciscan Curia in Rome finished in 1991, he moved back to Ireland from where he organised the Franciscan Challenge, a programme of renewal for members of the whole Franciscan Family based at Collegio S. Isidoro in Rome. Subsequently, he was elected Provincial Definitor, then Vicar Provincial and Secretary of the Province, before moving to S. Isidoro in 2005.
Louis returned to Ireland in August 2020 and took up residence in Cork friary before going to Our Lady’s Manor Nursing Home in Dalkey where he passed peacefully to the house of the Father on 12th August 2025.

Reposing at Dún Mhuire, Killiney, A96 R590, Thursday 14th from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday 15th in Merchants’ Quay, at 10.30am, followed by burial at Shanganagh Cemetery.
